K 3 Is The Place To Be!

Hello K3 Families,

We kicked off the week completing our Springhill BeKind21 Challenge!  The students loved hearing our daily kindness tip the past weeks.  Please continue the conversation of kindness at home, as we will circle back to this very important trait daily!

This week we focused on the letter /i/.  The students learned how there are 2 different types of letters in the alphabet, consonants and vowels.  Vowels are important because they are in every single word and even in names!   All week we studied our names through different activities, as well as discovered which vowels we have in our name.  In addition, the children worked on writing their name the “Kindergarten Way.”  Throughout the year, we will focus on this way of writing our name.  Starting with a capital and the rest of our letters lowercase.

In math this week we continued to work with shapes! The mathematicians are naming shapes, describing shapes by their attributes, identifying shapes and creating with shapes. The students created their own Freight Train Book, based on the story by Donald Crews.  The students used shapes on each page to create different cars of a train.  Take a look when you get a moment!

In Reader’s Workshop we wrapped our unit on “learning from books.”  When reading, the students zoom in on the pictures to learn what the book might be about.  In addition, we can learn from what the words say.  The students practiced “reading like a teacher.”  Great readers continue to reread books almost to the point they are memorized and sound like a teacher when they read! Please have your child read some of the books in their book boxes to you!  Next week we will begin reading old storybook favorites and nursery rhymes!

In Writer’s Workshop we continue to use our growing list of sight words to help us develop as writers.  By modeling the writing process, such as finger spaces and using words the students know, they will become more confident and independent in their writing!

On Friday, we had our first trial run of Break Out Rooms with our Fifth Grade buddies!  The students brought a special item to the end of the day and met with Kindergarten friends.  Each breakout room had a 5th grader to facilitate.  I was SO impressed by the students’ ability to navigate through the breakout rooms and return back to our original zoom with ease!  We will continue to have these meetings weekly so the students can build stronger relationships with one another.

If you have not had a chance to sign up your child for “show what you know,” please do so on our sign up genius.  This will be a time for me to meet one-on-one with your child and complete a stress-free assessment.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the fresh air!

Daily Work for Sept. 28th-Oct. 2nd

Each week I will post visuals of the work we will be doing daily. I am hoping this will be helpful to families to organize their school week.  Also, please note if there are any other extra pages, you can always do those on your own if you desire.

*PLEASE NOTE* you will need to cut out (not perfectly) the alphabet card that we will be using for the purple work book on Monday and Thursday. I apologize that I did not do that before hand.

* Also, students should have their Resource Binder and Book Bins with them everyday.

    Welcome to Kindergarten!

My name is Meghann McNaught and I am excited to be sharing the year with your child. This kindergarten year will be a year of new beginnings, a year filled with large and small accomplishments, a year of trying new things and making new friends. Kindergarten is an important year in your child's education. It sets the foundation for for future years. I am honored to be on this very memorable and special journey with you and your child.
