We welcomed in 2020 with a fantastic week! The students were eager to get to work and share stories from the winter break. They seemed so much more mature! How can that be?!!!

In reading, the class continued focusing on sight-words and began our second sight-word book. This week’s new word was “play”, next week we will work on “are.” Remember sight-words are commonly used words that are usually hard to sound out. Sight Words (sometimes called the Dolch Word List) are some of the most frequently used words in the English language. Even though they number only about 200, Sight Words make up approximately 50 to 70 percent of any given general, non-technical text. Therefore, teaching Sight Words as early as possible is considered a crucial part of early reading education.

We have finished working with ourAlpha-Friends, and are now using Sound-a-betto help us grow in our reading and writing skills. This is a phonics method created by the educator Dan Gurney. It works with all 26 letter sounds, and also tricky double letter sounds such as “ch, sh, th, ee, oa, ou” to name a few. This week we worked on the sound of short “a.”

In math, the children worked with “teen numbers”, building teen numbers, counting in the teens and writing teen numbers.

Our theme of snow and winter was woven throughout the week. New poems and songs were learned and fun literature was read. We painted snow people, created tissue paper stained glass snowflakes, and wrote some New Year’s resolutions!

Our author of the month is Jan Brett. She is a real favorite in kindergarten! Next week we will read Hedgie’s Surpriseand do a directed draw of Hedgie! Soon we will begin a literature unit based around one of her most popular books, The Mitten.

I hope everyone had a lovely break! I am happy to be with my class again! I am looking forward to a great year, with lots of fun, reading, and learning!
