Meet Mrs. Kornow (Mrs. K)

I am so excited to be your child's first grade teacher! Here are a few things about me . . .

How do you pronounce your last name?

Kornow is pronounced corn-now. Most of the students just call me Mrs. K. :)

What is your teaching experience?

While receiving my multiple subjects teaching credential, I taught second and fourth grade in the Berkeley School District. Thereafter, I taught second grade in East Palo Alto and then found my home at Springhill Elementary School where I have taught both second and first grade. I have training in Teachers College Reading and Writing Workshop as well as have experience facilitating activities and lessons associated with the California Common Core State Standards. I am very excited to continue to be a part of the Springhill community and look forward to getting to know you and your family!

Who is in your family?

My husband, French Bulldogs (Hugo and Tubbers), and I live in Oakland, CA. Education is a priority in our household as he is a teacher as well.

What are your hobbies?

Outside of teaching I enjoy many activities. I love to travel! My husband and I have been to 14 countries! I also like to go to the movies, practice yoga, go to the beach, and hike.

Announcements This Week:

-Homework: New January homework calendar with parent signature, student name, and all appropriate work attached is due Feb. 2nd. Please check your student's Friday bag for the calendar  I have also made it available on our classroom website in case it is misplaced. Students should choose 3 activities to complete each week on the calendar.  If applicable, students should also continue to practice their sight words. Orange sight word books should be sent to school each Friday. Thanks for working with your student at home.

-Scholastic Book orders due January 19th. Please copy and paste the link on our classroom website if interested.

-Rainy Day: If it is raining in the morning before school, students are instructed to have rainy day recess and should go to the classroom no earlier than 8:15am. I suggest leaving umbrellas at home as they can be distracting.

-We will be celebrating a “Tacky the Penguin Day” Friday, January 26th. Your child will be participating in penguin rotation activities with the other first grade classrooms. Tacky is an odd bird and dresses rather different. For example, he wears a Hawaiian shirt while the rest of the penguins all wear perfect bow ties. Your child is welcome to dress like Tacky and wear “different” clothing on the 26th as well. Please make sure your student is able to still complete classwork and play on the playground in their attire. Some suggestions: 2 different socks, 2 different shoes, clothes that don’t match, etc. Please no hair color spray or backwards clothing. Have fun!

-The Hundredth Day of school is Friday, February 2nd! To celebrate we will be participating in a variety of activities. Your student will need to create a t-shirt for homework with one hundred items attached to it. Some ideas might include attaching pompoms, cotton balls, googly eyes, stickers, band aids, safety pins, ribbons, thumb print paint, buttons, etc. Be creative! (Tip: please do not put food or heavy items on shirts as they will fall off. Using a hot glue gun, tacky craft glue, sewing glue, or simply drawing on a shirt might work best). Students will need to wear their shirts on the hundredth day (Friday, February 2nd) of school.
-Our Valentines' Day Celebration will be on Tuesday, February 13th. Please look for an email soon from our party coordinator if you are interested in volunteering or donating items. Also, students will have the option to pass out Valentine cards on Wednesday, February 14th. If this is your student's decision, they will need to make one for every child in our class. A class list will be sent home soon. Please no food or candy with the valentines. Thanks!

-Library books due Wednesdays.

-Please review work and notices with your student from their Friday bag and return on Mondays.
