Happy New Year, Students and Families in Room 14!

We have had such a wonderful and busy time together in the past four months.  I am very proud of all of my students - you have all worked hard in every subject and you've all made amazing progress in all areas of the curriculum.  Here's a review of our curriculum studies so far:

Our class continues to be excellent readers and writers.  Throughout our reading workshops, we have focused on various strategies to help us become better readers and critical thinkers.  In our Writer's Workshops we have worked on narrative and informational writing.  We will continue to hone our writing skills in the spring, writing biographies, fairy tales, and opinion writing pieces.  Our classroom has been buzzing with discussions about MacBeth and Ebenezer Scrooge - it's amazing how second graders can infer and discuss characters and their motivations in a story!  Room 14 is filled with lovely pieces of writing and art - winter holiday traditions, beautiful snowflake poems, New Year's Resolutions, and colorful snow globes abound.

In math, we continue to work on our regrouping skills while delving into geometry.  In the next few weeks, we will also be focusing on measurement and time.  In the spring, we'll move into three-digit equations with regrouping, data and graphs, and we'll end the year with an introduction to multiplication.

This fall, Miss Bornfleth in science lab focused on landforms and erosion.  We'll end our engineering unit in January, culminating in construction of Puppy Houses!  The spring will find us studying plants and biomes.  As we study biomes in the science lab, we will be focusing on habitats around the world in Room 14!  Our habitat unit will culminate in the creation of biome habitats for special Nano Creatures from space!

Social studies brought community workers into our classroom in October.  We are wrapping up a unit on maps and geography.  In January and February we will be focusing on our family heritage.  We will culminate our social studies unit in the spring with a focus on the US government and national symbols.

We had a wonderful time studying producers and consumers with our field trip to Diablo Foods in October!  We look forward to two more exciting field trips!  One will be to the Oakland Zoo, correlating to our studies on biomes and animal habitats.  In April, we will visit John Muir's home in Martinez to explore his life, work, and impact on conservation within the National Parks System.

All of our wonderful learning will culminate in a beautiful Open House Night in May when all students and families are invited to Room 14 to celebrate a year of hard work, growth, and creativity!

Please check the website periodically for updates with photos, important dates, and reminders for the coming months!
